CARING FOR YOUR JEWELLERY

Clean pieces = sparkling, long-lasting memories. ✨

Your jewellery is more than just an accessory, it holds meaning and memories, so it is important to understand how to care for your pieces to ensure they can be treasured for a lifetime.

Over time, jewellery will collect dirt & oils that dulls its shine.

See some tips below on the best way to care for your jewellery.

Sterling silver will last a lifetime, but it is particularly prone to tarnishing.  It’s important to understand that tarnish is in no way related to the quality of the silver but more related to the chemistry of this precious metal.

Sterling Silver contains 92.5% Silver and 7.5% of an additional metal (usually copper.) The copper is what makes the silver harder & more durable for jewellery making. While the addition of copper is what makes it more durable, copper is also what causes tarnish.

Tarnish is a chemical reaction caused by the copper reacting to moisture and sulfur in the air. Sterling Silver will generally tarnish quicker in high humidity climates & places with higher levels of air pollution. Perfume, hairspray, deodorant, medications and moisturisers can also contribute to tarnishing due to the chemical reactions with these substances. For some people tarnish can appear quicker than others based on the environment and individuals body acidity.

The following tips can help you look after your sterling piece:

✨The best way to keep your sterling silver jewelry bright is to wear it. The oils in your skin naturally polish sterling silver to prevent it tarnishing – this metal loves to be worn! Polish your piece approximately once a month with a jewellery polishing cloth or dip cleaner. You could also use a baking powder soak where you line a dish with aluminum foil, fill with water, 1 tsp salt & 2 tsp baking soda. Soak for 5 minutes

✨ When not in use, store your jewelry in a dark, low-humidity area and in an air-tight container

✨ Where possible avoid direct contact with perfume, lotions, hair spray & fake tan

Gold-filled jewelry is generally easy to care for because it is highly resistant to tarnish. There are a variety of things that can affect your jewellery which include your lifestyle, how often you wear your piece and how often you clean it . Over time it may loose it’s shine and feel a little dull. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals & chlorinated pools.
