Over time, without proper care, all sterling jewellery is susceptible to tarnish. It’s important to understand that tarnish is in no way related to the quality of the silver but more related to the chemisty of this precious metal.

Sterling Silver contains 92.5% Silver and 7.5% of an additional metal, usually copper. The copper is what makes the Silver harder & more durable for jewellery making. While the addition of copper is what makes it more durable, copper is also what causes tarnish.

Tarnish is a chemical reaction caused by the copper reacting to moisture and sulfur in the air. Sterling Silver will generally tarnish quicker in high humidity climates & places with higher levels of air pollution. Perfume, hairspray, deodorant, medications and moisturisers can also contribute to tarnishing due to the chemical reactions with these substances. For some people tarnish can appear quicker than others based on the environment and individuals body acidity.
